Heavy thumps after dark
A possum weighs two to four kilograms, so you hear solid footsteps, not the light scurrying of a rat.

How do I know it is a possum and not a rat?
Possums are heavy, so you hear thumps and footsteps, mostly just after dark and just before dawn. Rats sound like light scratching and scurrying, often through the night and in the walls. Should I block the hole myself?
